Fabric Chip


Manufacturing challenges, costs and environmental concerns associated with plastics have prompted the exploration of naturally wicking substances for performing diagnostic tests. Along with paper, fabric is another medium whose natural wetting properties can be used as the basis of biological assays. Achira is working on developing textile weaving as a platform to manufacture sensors. Our deeply innovative Fabchip platform takes advantage of the existing expertise and capital infrastructure available in the textile industry to manufacture biological sensors. The idea is simple but the output can be complex and flexible.

Yarn coated with appropriate biological reagents like antibodies or enzymes is woven into a piece of fabric at the desired location. Strips of fabric are then cut out, packaged and can form the substrate for di erent biological assays. Even a simple handloom could produce 1000s of these sensors at very low cost.
